The 5 Fundamentals — Paul Wakefield's Framework

This is the long-form version of the framework. The interactive page lives at /fundamentals. This page explains the logic, the warning, and the order — written by Paul Wakefield from 30 years of fixing businesses from the inside.

The logic

Every business that scales runs on five interlocking systems: Accounting, Systems, People, Marketing, Sales. They are fundamentals because a weakness in one breaks the others. Strong sales with weak accounting bankrupts the business faster. Strong marketing with weak systems delivers a worse product to more people. The fundamentals compound — for you or against you.

The warning

Most founders default to fixing Sales and Marketing first. They are visible, measurable, and feel closest to revenue. But if the upstream fundamentals — Accounting and Systems — are weak, fixing Sales accelerates the failure mode. More revenue through a broken system equals a bigger problem.

The order

Diagnose in this sequence: Accounting first (can you see clearly?), then Systems (does the work flow?), then People (do the right humans run it?), then Marketing (does demand exist?), then Sales (do you convert?). Fix in the same order.

Why now

Custom AI changed the cost of fixing fundamentals. What used to require senior hires and 12–24 months now requires a defined build and 4–8 weeks. The framework is the same. The leverage is new.
